Hola Merfolk!

The Mermaid: A Love Tale by Lily Dougall is a Victorian-era story from 1895 written by a feminist. If you like feeling like you’re back in time then this is the book for you. You must be patient. It is a slow story, but the mystery of who the mermaid is will keep you engaged. It was published by Amazon and marketed as a fantasy romance with a sweet heat level.

Caius is a farmer’s son who becomes a doctor and journeys to the Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence off of Nova Scotia. Caius hasn’t discovered who he is and the beautiful, rugged setting is a nice juxtaposition to his waffling personality. He is firm in his Christian beliefs. But a philosophical woman comes along and challenges him. Their talks help him grow. He is no longer the person he once was. He is instantly in love when he finds out she’s a mermaid.

Against the romance is what the people do to survive the harsh winters. Trigger warning—seals are hunted.
