Hola Merfolk!

If you’re into merfolk, Among the Mermaids: Facts, Myths, and Enchantments from the Sirens of the Sea by Varla Ventura is one of the books you should have in your library. The book goes into nautical terms, merfolk stories that made the headlines, poetry, mermaid stories, and two mermen stories that I recollect.

One of my favorite stories in Among the Mermaids is a true account about a merman. A woman and her mother stayed at a new resort in Bermuda. While sleeping, the adult daughter woke up to a man slithering across the room. Her intuition told her he didn’t have legs. He turned his head toward her. He had red stringy hair, white skin like the bottom of a stingray, and black eyes without pupils. He opened his mouth and showed his sharp teeth. The woman closed her eyes, prayed, and went to sleep.

The next morning, she asked her mom if she saw anything. Her mom said no and seemed agitated. Later the mom admitted to feeling something touching her feet. When I read the story I had the feeling that the mom was more than touched on the feet. It’s a creepy story, but one I can’t forget.

I found Among the Mermaids a curious and comforting read.
